High above St. Leonhard im Pitztal, the Pitztal Glacier awaits, offering numerous ski routes and excellent winter sports conditions on over 40 kilometres of natural snow slopes. The Glacier Express and the Wildspitz Cable Car whisk you up to Mt. Hinterer Brunnenkogel at 3,440 metres above sea level. Perched on an impressive, free-floating terrace sits Austria's highest café - the "3,440" - boasting panoramic views. The only thing towering above is Tyrol's highest peak, the 3,768-metre Wildspitze, the second highest mountain in Austria.
The Pitztal Glacier opens its ski season as early as September. Snowboarders can enjoy the X Park with its various areas and a dedicated cross park. There's a separate practice area for children, and for ski tourers, the Ski Touring Park powered by DYNAFIT offers three ascent routes. "Snowmaker" is the glacier's innovative concept, based on physical laws, which produces snow without chemical additives. This enables an early start to the season and, thanks to the resulting buffer layer for the ice, reduces glacial retreat.
The Rifflsee Skiing Area, accessible from the locality of Mandarfen, opens its winter season a few weeks later. Here, you'll also find a practice area, a mogul slope, and the Mandarfen Kinderland. Free ski courses for children aged three to five are offered on selected dates. Cross-country skiers benefit from the perfectly groomed Pitztal cross-country ski trail network, including the Pitztal Glacier cross-country ski centre and the Rifflsee high-altitude trail at 2,200 metres.
