Kaltenbach with the hamlet Ernberg was first mentioned in 1150 AD as "Chartenbach". Constantly threatened by different rivers, agriculture was almost impossible. However, starting from 1685, pharmaceutical trade flourished in the Zilllertal valley, reaching also Switzerland and Germany...
The Zillertal Railway, running from Jenbach to Mayrhofen, also stops at Kaltenbach and stands for a particular train ride, a travel back in time with this narrow-gauge railway. Worth to be visited are two chapels in the municipal area, the St. Mary's Chapel and the Hubertus Chapel. Inside the St. Mary's Chapel from the 17th century, called Marienkapelle, you can observe artistic paintings, several statues and beautifully decorated glass windows. The war memorial at the forefront of the chapel was established by the well-known sculptor Hans Rieser from Hippach.
In summer, the hiking area Hochzillertal is located along the Zillertaler Höhenstrasse, one of the most beautiful Alpine roads of Austria. Following the road to the Kaltenbach Mountain Hut at 1,800 m a.s.l., in a 30-minutes' walk you can reach the Alpine Flower Garden. The refuge itself offers with the Marmot Park Zillertal a special place for kids. In winter, skiing in the Hochfügen Ski Region, Ice Disco in the evening on the Fügen-Kaltenbach ice skating ground, and cross-country skiing on the Hochzillertal high-altitude trail are on the agenda in Kaltenbach.
