Gries am Brenner - that's the border municipality of South Tyrol in Italy. Single farms, hamlets and component localities such as Vinaders at the entrance of the Obernberg Valley, the former toll station Lueg, and Brennersee with the eponymous lake form the municipal area. Gries is part of the North Tyrolean part of the Wipptal valley proceeding in the upper part of South Tyrol as Alta Valle Isarco. Already in the Roman era, it was an important station on the way south.
In the course of time, several personalities such as Charlemagne, Albrecht Dürer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stopped here during their travels. Furthermore, Gries am Brenner is the birthplace of the Austrian actor Tobias Moretti and of the former Austrian alpine skiing champion Günther Mader. The surroundings are perfect for hiking, e.g. to Lake Obernberg and to Lake Brennersee, located at more than 1,300 m a.s.l.
Also winter is able to satisfy every needs: High above the village there's the Bergeralm Ski & Fun Arena with its 29.5 km of slopes. Moreover there are the two toboggan runs Nösslachhütte and Mt. Sattelberg, a 2,115 m high mountain and popular destination for ski touring.
