The sunny village of Karres is located on an elevation above the Inn river at the foot of Mt. Tschirgant. Settled already in Roman times, in Mediaeval times it gained in importance due to mining, which lasted up to the 19th century.
A pleasant walk shows you Karres from its cultural site: Still today, two miners' buildings with Gothic elements remind on the period of time in which mining was an important metier in the village. The St. Stephanus Church in the centre of Karres, however, was mentioned for the first time in 1447, whereas its steeple presents the year 1583. Particularly worth to be visited in the interior are the side altars, the pulpit and the war memorial. Also the summer concerts of the local music group are a popular meeting point for residents and visitors.
The most popular excursion destination, however, is and will remain the alpine world. Plenty of hiking trails lead to destinations such as the Karres Mountain Hut, the Karrösten Mountain Hut and the top of Mt. Tschirgant (2,370 m a.s.l.). Less challenging is a walk along the famous Way of St. James or a bike tour on the Inn Cycle Route - Tiroler Oberland. Both lead past the village.
