The village Kirchdorf in Tirol is situated in the Leukental valley at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser mountain chain. Its name - not to be confused with Kirchberg in Tirol, located 20 km away - derives from the old church of the village, as "Kirche" means church in German. At the place where this church rises today, already in the 2nd and 3rd century AD a Roman villa was located, which was destroyed during the Migration Period. A first church was mentioned already in 870 AD.
Kirchdorf in Tirol consists of several hamlets and dispersed settlements in the Kitzbühel Alps. Also great parts of the Wilder Kaiser mountain chain belong to the municipal territory. Its location in close vicinity to the surrounding peaks also influences summer tourism: A variety of hiking paths, MTB trails and fixed-rope routes await you here, leading to stunning places such as the mysterious "Teufelsgasse" gorge, on Mt. Maukspitze, and to the nature reserve of the Kaiserbachtal valley.
Moreover, the Grossache river basin was re-naturalized and has become a popular recreation area for promenaders and cyclists, which can proceed along the Leukental Cycle Route to Kitzbühel. In winter, however, the St. Johann in Tirol and Steinplatte Skiing Areas are within easy reach. Together with the small local skiing area, they are connected to the 3 Country Leisure Arena ski resort. After exhausting outdoor activities, the Kaiserquell WellnessCenter provides for relaxation.
