At the foot of the mighty Mieming Range there is Obsteig, the most western and highest located municipality of the Mieming Plateau. Also the name of the village refers to this fact, deriving from "ob der Steigung", which means "above the ascent". Johann Haller (1844-1906), North Pole explorer and forester in Obsteig, is sepulchred here.
One of the most popular destinations in the surroundings is Klamm Castle between Obsteig and Fronhausen. Once upon a time it was meant to be a sentinel for the transport route of Mötz, later on it was presented as "Sonnenstein Castle" in the German TV serial "The Mountain Doctor". From the castle, a short trail takes you to the 25 m high waterfall of the Klammbach river. Another popular excursion destination are the larch meadows at Obsteig, extending to the 1,129 m high Holzleiten Pass. This beautiful spot of land has been put under natural protection in 1981.
In winter, Obsteig offers a small but mighty skiing area extending up to 1,500 m a.s.l. on the slopes of Mt. Grünberg. It also includes a sledging hill for kids. The ski instructors of the Obsteig Ski School are pleased to help you making the first steps on snow or refining your skiing technique.
