The rural-oriented village of Birgitz is located at the foot of the Kalkkögel, a mountain chain that belongs to the Stubai Alps. On a hill called "Hohe Birga" settlement traces of the Raeti, dating back to the period of time around 100 BC, have been found. Today, the Archaeological Nature Trail, which is accessible all year round, takes you to the wall remains on the Hohe Birga. During the summer months, also the Rhaetian Museum Hohe Birga in the village centre opens its doors.
The village is a calm holiday resort with beautiful farms. Several hiking paths and MTB trails snake their way across the above mentioned Kalkkögel Mountains. One of the destinations for families, nature lovers and mountain bikers is the Birgitz Mountain Hut at 1,840 m a.s.l. The easy 1-hour ascent starts at the parking space Birgitzer Alm, and the panoramic view from the hut includes the Nockspitze peak and the Inn Valley. For the little ones, there is an kids programme at the nearby Lake Natters, providing fun and entertainment during the summer months.
In winter, you absolutely do not have to miss the natural toboggan run Birgitzer Alm: A 1.5-hour walk takes you to the start, and then you can rush down to the Adelshof tavern. From there, another toboggan run of 6 km leads further down into the Birgitz Valley. For those who love skiing and snowboarding, there is the ski resort Axamer Lizum with 41 km of ski slopes in close vicinity. Further skiing areas are located in the Stubaital, including the one on the mighty Stubai Glacier.
