Between Mt. Grossglockner and Mt. Grossvenediger there is the charming village of Virgen. Due to its position between the Virger Nordkette and the Lasörling Group, this area is characterised by a beneficial climate. In fact, Virge in Slavonic language means "sunny place", the mountain chains even keep away the cold wind. A well-known tradition is the "Virger Widderzug" on the first Saturday after Easter. The event is about a ram that is auctioned in favour of a pilgrimage church.
Virgen offers in summer a wide range of excursion destinations: Among them there are two cultural monuments, the Rabenstein Ruin dating back to the 12th century, and the Mary in the Snow Pilgrimage Church in Obermauern with its wonderful fresco cycle. More active is a walk on the Path of Senses, on which the motto is "listening, smelling and touching", and if you aim higher, we recommend the Venediger High Route which takes you into the majestic Venediger Group.
As in winter the Grossglockner Resort Kals-Matrei Ski Region is within easy reach, you can enjoy skiing on 44.5 km of slopes, several ski routes and cross-country ski tracks, and four toboggan runs. Near the village itself there is a T-bar lift, which is perfectly suitable for children and beginners, and the natural toboggan run Würfelehütte. Keyword: moonlight tobogganing...
