The idyllic locality of Matrei in Osttirol rises only a few km from the small town of Lienz. If you would like to see the area from above, we recommend a trip to Weissenstein Castle: Since 1865, it has been in private hands and that is why it can only be visited from outside. However, thanks to its position it seems to watch over the valley basin and offers a magnificent view.
The two highest peaks of Austria, Mt. Grossglockner (3,798 m a.s.l.) and Mt. Grossvenediger (3,657 m a.s.l.) as well as the High Tauern National Park are located right on the doorstep and make Matrei a so-called National Park Village. High-alpine walks from one mountain hut to the next, a hike on the Zedlach Paradise Nature Trail which leads through a wonderful old larch forest, or a tour to one of the 150 surrounding three-thousanders are very popular in summer. The minerals kept inside the mountains can be admired at the Local Museum "Medaria".
The Matreier Goldried Skiing Area is one of the ski resorts in the Alps where the snow is hardly ever missing: Its valley station is located in the village centre. It forms - together with the Kals am Grossglockner Skiing Area - the Grossglockner Resort Kals-Matrei, the largest one of East Tyrol.
