Stans is a comfortable holiday resort at the foot of the Karwendel Mountains. The nature reserve community is located in the largest nature park in area of Austria, the Karwendel Alpine Park, and is therefore a popular destination for active holidays in every season of the year.
Around Stans, there is much to discover: The Wolf Gorge, a canyon near the village, proceeds across many bridges and 354 steps to the oldest pilgrimage site of North Tyrol, St. Georgenberg. Up there, you can visit two churches and stop at a little tavern. Afterwards you can go back or continue the hike: The trail leads past the Maria Tax Hermitage to Tratzberg Castle above Jenbach. The building is a real Renaissance treasure, which is publicly accessible during the warm months.
Also the local mountain Stanser Joch (2,102 m a.s.l.) is a fantastic hiking tour. At the summit you can enjoy an unforgettable view on Lake Achensee. This lake is the largest one of Tyrol, featuring a circumference of 21 km and a depth of 133 metres. The village life is furthermore characterized by many processions and festivals, which are done by the local associations, such as the annual village festival in June, where you can try plenty of Tyrolean delicacies and enjoy live folk music.
