In the mountain village of Reith im Alpbachtal, on a small hill right next to the main school, a herb and recreation garden awaits you, where it smells and blossoms. It is called Kräutergarten Hildegard von Bingen in German language and was built by the Hildegard Association on a 900 sqm field. It has since offered not only a very special place to relax, but also a place where the time-honoured herbal knowledge and the holistic world view of Hildegard of Bingen are collected.
Hildegard of Bingen was a polymath with a knowledge of nature and healing in the 12th century, as well as a Benedictine nun, abbess, poet and composer. In 2012, the saint was elevated by Pope Benedict XVI to the rank of Doctor Ecclesiae universalis, a Doctor of the Universal Church.
The show garden includes a recreation area, a barefoot path, the Massage Path and a shallow water area. Numerous herbs and healing plants grow in between, and their effects are explained on small wooden panels. Guided tours are offered regularly in summer.
