In an isolated mountain valley in the Karwendel Nature Park, between some beautiful peaks, there’s an impressive landscape shaped by the forces of nature: the Small Ahornboden

The starting point of our hike through the Johannistal valley in the Karwendel Alpine Park can be reached by car within 45 minutes, starting from Lake Achensee. We pass the Sylvenstein Reservoir in Bavaria and drive to Vorderriss and, finally, Hinterriss in the Tyrolean Risstal valley. After the village and before the start of the Eng toll route, there's the P7 parking space in the Karwendelau, a protected wetland. We follow the path no. 231 at the slope of Mount Stuhlberg and enter the Johannistal valley on a wide forest road. The trail follows the course of the Johannesbach stream and proceeds directly to the Small Ahornboden (Kleiner Ahornboden).
The 2,749 m high Birkkarspitze in the Karwendel Mountains dominates this small valley floor with its multitude of maples. In order to save this original vegetation, the young trees are protected by wire mesh fence from natural enemies. A hunting lodge and a wooden hut are located at the Small Ahornboden, but unfortunately there's no rest point. We recommend to bring your own snacks. Adjacent to the memorial for the famous alpinist Hermann von Barth you'll find a drinking water fountain - the landscape invites to a stop and to enjoy this unique natural spectacle. The way back follows the same route.
