Christmas in Lienz is a special experience every year: Nestled between the main square and Liebburg Castle, home to the town hall, the Lienz Advent Market, called Lienzer Adventmarkt, opens its characteristic stalls. Liebburg Castle itself transforms into a giant Advent calendar and for two weeks hosts the nativity scene exhibition of the Lienz Nativity Scene Association.
Just before the first weekend of Advent, the market begins, inviting you to visit until Christmas Eve. In the atmospheric Christmas village, you'll find Christmas tree decorations, regional products, gift ideas, and tasty treats. Of course, punch and mulled wine are a must. In the Living Workshop, you can craft old-wood lanterns, and watch and participate alongside glassblowers, candlemakers, woodcarvers, and artisans from the herb village of Irschen.
As darkness falls, the night watchman begins his rounds, halberd in hand. With his nightly call, he closes the Lienz Advent Market promptly at 9 pm each evening. A little further afield, at Bruck Castle, Lienz bakers and confectioners bake the original Original Lienzer Lebzelten 1644®: This gingerbread is filled with Tyrolean cranberries and coated with the finest marzipan.
