Steam raises from the cylinders and you can hear a locomotive chuffing - it is the steam train of the Zillertal Railway (Zillertalbahn) running for 32 km into the valley with 35 kmph. "The way is the goal", that's the motto: This railway dates back to a time when train journeys were an exciting event. However, still today a journey with this steam train is a special adventure.
The narrow-gauge railway with its gauge of 760 is not only a tourist attraction, but is also used for the timber transport, and for the local transport with modern wagons. Already in 1868 first plans to replace the road in the valley were made, but those ideas have been put in action only some decades later: In 1902 the railway commenced operations.
Besides a normal journey on the steam train, the Zillertal Railway also offers the "Train on demand", a special highlight for celebrations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries. The Crystal Wagon (Kristallwagon) with 62,000 cut Swarovski crystals on windows, ceiling panels, lamps, and the bar is part of the unforgettable experience.
