Definitely a storybook lake is the Zireiner See in the Rofan Mountains. "The Blue Eye of the Rofan" and "The Jewel of the Rofan" is not only considered to be the most beautiful lake in the Rofan Group, but also the most often photographed mountain lake of Tyrol. Depending on the weather, its waters change colour nuances - around midday, Mt. Rofanspitze is reflected in the lake.
A visit to Lake Zireiner can perfectly be combined with a pleasant hike: It can be reached via the Zireiner Mountain Hut. From the west end of the lake, further paths take you to the surrounding peaks such as Mt. Rofanspitze and Mt. Sagzahn, both more than 2,000 m high. Even the long distance hiking trail E4 between Spain and Cyprus takes past this lake. For families, it is easily reachable from the mountain station of the Sonnwendjoch Cable Car in 45 minutes.
Unfortunately, the Zireiner See is too cold for swimming, but in the crystal clear waters many little common minnows, called "Pfrillen" in dialect, are at home. According to legends, the waters of this lake drag you under if you fall asleep at the lakeside, so please be careful!
