Lake Piburg

In the heart of a fabulous protected area you come across Lake Piburg, named after Piburg, a quarter of Oetz

In the heart of the impressive peaks of the Oetztal Alps and the Oetztal Nature Park, there is the Piburger See, reflecting the surrounding peaks in its waters. Already in 1929 it has been put under natural protection. In the last century, a healing effect was attached to the waters of Lake Piburg, which resulted in physicians prescribing some "bathing days". Today, it is one of the warmest mountain lakes for bathing in Tyrol, as despite of its altitude at 915 m it reaches up to 24 degrees C. Its origins date back to a massive rockfall subsequent to the Ice Age.

However, there are several legends ranking about its origins, which always focus on the same facts. Once upon a time, there used to be a farmstead, whose inhabitants committed outrage. In order to punish them, the farm was flooded by the waters of a newly emerged lake. Even a dragon is considered to have raged and rioted in its waters...

At the lakeside there's a restaurant with boat rental and bathing establishment. If you prefer fishing, you can purchase a fishing ticket in the Oetz town hall: It is allowed between May and October. Also in winter, Lake Piburg is a popular excursion destination, as there are 20 km of winter paths snaking in the surroundings and the Piburg toboggan run for a special adventure.
