Along the Rio Kals and the Rio Dorfer in East Tyrol there are several horizontal water mills, so-called storeyed mills

The chronicle of Kals am Grossglockner says that in the mid-20th century still 56 mills could be found in the village. About 50 years ago, when animal husbandry became more and more popular, the buildings rapidly decayed. Together with the High Tauern National Park, the Kals Mill Association succeeded in preserving six of these lovely buildings.
Along the Rio Kalser and the Rio Dorfer, the Kals Storeyed Mills (Kalser Stockmühlen) form a little outdoor museum. Unfortunately one of them, the Rogler Mill, was destroyed by a thunderstorm in 2017. The beautiful 250 to 300 years old wooden buildings are the last storeyed mills throughout Tyrol. But what exactly is this type of mill? The Stockmühle, or Fluttermühle, is the oldest form of a water mill and quite easily constructed with its rotating grindstone.
A forest path leads you from Grossdorf to the Taurer where the eco-nature trail for children starts, and to the mills. In summer, it gets lively here: Regularly demonstrations show you the traditional way to become flour. And afterwards you can take home the flour from biological agriculture.
