Zell am Ziller

Every year at the beginning of May, the Gauder Fest takes place, the biggest spring and traditional costumes’ festival of Austria

Altitude: 580 m a.s.l.

Zell am Ziller, the smallest locality of the valley in size, is located in the rear Zillertal. Besides Fügen, it is the economic, administrative and educational centre of the valley - for this reason, there are many important facilities located in this place, such as the Zillertal Tourism School. When in the 8th century monks started from the Gerlos Pass converting the inhabitants, at Zell am Ziller a monk's cell was established. Also the old name of the village - "Celles" - remembers those times.

Boredom does not exist in Zell am Ziller! The market town is located at the junction of the Gerlos Valley and the Zillertal, and represents a station of the nostalgic Zillertal Railway. You say that's too slow for you? So try the Arena Coaster Zillertal, an all-year round toboggan run, for a rush of adrenaline: Located directly at the bottom of the Zillertal Arena, waves and steep curves provide the thrill you might have been looking for. The active offer is completed by the newly designed Zell am Ziller Leisure Park, the Gerlossteinwand fixed rope route and many MTB trails.

Two sights are well-worth a visit in the village: At Zell am Ziller there is the brewery "Zillertal Bier" founded in 1500 AD, which is the oldest private brewery of Tyrol. Its BrauKunstHaus makes you discover the secrets of beer production, and ends with a beer tasting and the traditional pretzel. The Zillertal Regional Museum, however, housed by the "Ental" farm, one of the oldest farmhouses of the Zillertal valley, tells about the history of Zell am Ziller and its surroundings.
