Lake Obernberg in the Stubai Alps consists of two parts, which were separated by a rock avalanche back in prehistoric times. Only in spring, when the water level rises due to the snow melt in the mountains, the two parts are united. On rests of the rock slide, the Maria am See (Mary on the Lake) Chapel has been built, which is accessible via a bridge.
In order to preserve its water quality, bathing was prohibited long ago. What is particularly remarkable is the richness in fish: In the crystal clear water there are brook trouts, brown trouts, chars, rainbow trouts and many other fish. Fishing is forbidden, Lake Obernberg is protected.
Today, the lake is an attractive destination, as the hike to the lake is not too long. Further paths lead you round the Obernberger See. Also the 4th stage of the Tyrolean High Route takes to the alpine lake. It can be best experienced in a rowboat. In winter, however, the 2 km long Lake Obernberg toboggan run starts on the shores.
