Innsbruck’s “White Roof”: skiing and more at the Axamer Lizum with its Hoadlhaus restaurant

The Axamer Lizum, the valley at the head of the Axams Stream in the Sellrain Mountains, is also known as Innsbruck's "White Roof". The Sellrain Mountains themselves are known as the "Dolomites of North Tyrol". The area is popular for its hiking and winter sports opportunities. The alpine skiing events for the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck were held here - the downhill and giant slalom runs on the Hoadl are legendary. At the Axamer Lizum car park at 1,600 metres, the modern Hoadl 10-person gondola lift begins its ascent. It whisks you comfortably up to the Hoadlhaus mountain station in just six minutes and has replaced the previous lifts. There's also the Birgitzköpfl Lift, which takes you to the freeride area.
Most of the slopes are intermediate, supplemented by several ski routes. This makes the Axamer Lizum one of the largest ski resorts around Innsbruck. The valley runs take you down to Axams, Götzens and Mutters. The Golden Roofpark awaits snowboarders with its individual slopestyle area and a funslope with various obstacles. Opposite the main slopes, the Birgitzköpfl beckons, an ideal area for freeriders with 300 hectares of terrain. Two freeride checkpoints ensure safety: one at the car park and the other at the Hoadlhaus mountain station.
Two marked ascent routes for ski tourers and two toboggan runs - Pleisenhütte and Birgitzer Alm - complete the winter offer of the Axamer Lizum Skiing Area. After an active day in the mountains, the Hoadlhaus at 2,340 metres, with the largest covered terrace in the Alps, invites you to stop for refreshments. The architecturally award-winning building (ISR Architecture Award 2009) offers magnificent views. Cosy ski huts like the Lizum Alm, the Pleisenhütte, and the Dohlennest also invite you to take a break. And if you're looking for even more variety, the SKI plus CITY Pass Innsbruck Stubai gives you access to 12 ski resorts between the Stubai Valley and Innsbruck.
